"Filip let out a battle cry and charged forward like a soldier." ... woehaaaaa !!!

Saturday, July 3, 2004: The sixth world cup cross-country race was held at a new venue in Calgary, Canada, at the Canada Olympic Park. The organizers, who did the original Grundig series and who do the Trans Alps Series and the Trans Rockies races, put together the event. We did not get as many spectators as hoped with the holiday weekend and the bad weather. In short, Kelli Emmett was 13th, Filip Meirhaeghe won the men's race, Jay Henry finished 48th, and Frank Mapel finished 52nd. Barbara Blatter had a crash and did not finish the race. For detailed lap times and full race results, see www.tissottiming.com.

The course: The course in Calgary was 5.5 km long. It was a relatively fast course with no long climbs and without the rocky technical sections found in other World Cup courses. Most of the course was singletrack which presented some problems for passing during the race, and the race officials made some changes to open up the tight sections in the woods. After doing a 600-meter start loop, the course made its way from an open section at the base of the ski lift into the woods. The wooded sections had lots of tight turns, off-camber sections, water crossings, log jumps, and small bridges. It was difficult to establish a steady rhythm in the wood sections, which accounted for about half of the course. After riding past a large pond, the course had some longer straight sections on dirt, with a descent followed by a climb, going back to the start/finish area. We arrived in Calgary on Tuesday evening, and conditions were relatively dry. It rained a little bit on Thursday afternoon, and the dirt turned into clay-like slippery mud. It rained hard on Friday afternoon, and the course became very slippery and muddy.

The material: Barbara rode her Specialized hardtail bike with the Fast Trak 2.0 tubeless tires in the front and back (1.5 bar pressure in the front and 1.7 bar in the back). Filip raced with his Specialized Epic bike with Fast Trak 2.0 tires on the front and back (2.0 bar pressure front and back). Both Barbara and Filip opted to ride with Hope disc brakes this week for the consistent and precise braking. Both riders raced with their RockShox Black Box prototype forks, Crank Brothers pedals, and Specialized Decibel helmets.

Women's Race: The women's start was at 11:00 am. Although the sun was shining, the course was still muddy and slippery from the rain on Friday night. The women had to do one start loop (600 meters) and five full laps. Barbara was feeling good and had a fantastic start, moving into second position immediately after the start loop and into first position by the feed zone. She was passed on the short climb by Stropparo before heading into the woods. At one point in the course, the riders had to ride or jump over logs placed perpendicular to the trail. Barbara jumped the logs but lost her grip on her handlebar, and crashed. She injured her knee (bruised the patella) which swelled up and made it too painful to continue. Kelli Emmett started in 20th position, and caught on to a group of five women who were jockeying for 10th to 15th place. Kelli was in 13th place, then 11th, and then finished in 13th place.

Men's Race: Filip was called to the line first, proudly wearing the World Cup leader's jersey. Jay Henry was in 30th position at the start line and Frank Mapel was 59th. The men had to do one start loop (600 meters) and seven laps. The weather was still sunny, and the course conditions had improved slightly after the women raced. As in other World Cup races this year, Roel Paulissen and Christoph Sauser immediately got away in the first lap, working together to make time on the other racers. Jay got caught in a crash at the start, and immediately dropped to the back of the peloton in 82nd position. Frank pulled through and held his place. At the beginning of the second lap, Sauser and Paulissen had six seconds on Filip and a group of four other men. Filip was not happy about racing for third place but could not close the gap. By the third lap, Paulissen and Sauser had a gap of 40 seconds on Filip, Hermida, and Peraud. Meanwhile, the stormy clouds in the distance were slowly approaching.

By the fourth lap, Paulissen and Sauser had a gap of 1 minute and six seconds, followed by Hermida and Peraud. Filip dropped to fifth place, ten seconds behind Hermida and Peraud. During the fourth lap, the wind picked up, lightning was visible, and the thunderstorm began. The temperature dropped and then hail began to shower down for about 30 minutes. We all wondered whether the race would be shortened as the riders passed with mud-soaked jerseys and cold arms and legs. Although the weather conditions were very bad, we were happy because it was a great opportunity for Filip to move up especially since he is so skilled at racing in the mud. Many riders were pulled off the course (based on the 80% rule), and Jay and Frank had to stop before going into the fifth lap. Filip was thinking of stopping, because it was so cold and he was riding against the wind back toward the start/finish area. He also did not want to risk getting sick just before his important training camps for the Olympics. Filip remained in third place in the fifth lap almost one-and-a-half minutes behind Sauser, while Sauser moved 30 seconds ahead of Paulissen. The race shifted as Filip held a steady pace while the other racers slowed down; early in the race, the lap times were about 16 to 17 minutes but slowed to over 21 minutes per lap after the weather changed.

At the beginning of the sixth lap, David Meirhaeghe (our team mechanic and Filip's brother) announced on the radio that Filip was alone in the lead, almost 30 seconds ahead of Sauser. As he entered the feed zone, Filip let out a battle cry and charged forward like a soldier. Paulissen held third place, and Hermida moved up to fourth and Peraud held fifth place. Filip won the race, three minutes and 28 seconds ahead of Sauser. It was really an incredible race with horrible racing conditions. After the race, Filip's arms were covered with welts from the hail and he was shivering. After a warm shower and some hot tea, Filip recovered and went to the podium for his ELEVENTH career World Cup victory. Filip holds the leader's jersey and will wear it at World Cup Finals in Livigno, Italy, this September.
