Over de Belgen niets gehoord, evenals over Sauser. Paulissen blijft dus waarschijnlijk WB-leider.

go go go Flupke en de Roel natuurlijk nie vergeten !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wat was me dat ??? racers "cutting" the course !!! [-X

lees het allemaal in Susan's race report:

Subject: Race report, Schladming, Austria, XC World Cup

Sunday, June 20, 2004: The fourth world cup cross-country race was held in the mountain region of Schladming, Austria, not far from the former race site in Kaprun. We had good weather during the week before the race, with sun and dry conditions. All of that changed on Saturday evening when the thunderstorms moved in, with constant rain all day Sunday. The heavy rain turned a challenging course into a nearly-impossible-to-ride course. In the cross-country race, Barbara stopped and Filip was 6th. For detailed lap times and full race results, see www.tissottiming.com.

The course: The course was 5 km long. The start line was set up at the Planai finish stadium (used for ski racing), altitude 740 m, just beneath a steep pitch of gravel, which kept climbing up to a bridge, followed by another steep climb along some switchbacks. The downhill sections were rooty and steep, and were moderately technical, going back toward the finish area where spectators could see the racers a second time. The course climbed up to 908 m altitude, followed by a downhill and along a small trail through the woods, then a short uphill, and then along the Talbach River. The course then took to the pavement and went through the town of Schladming, then back toward the start/finish area with one last uphill in a forest, with a downhill with switchbacks to the finish line.

The material: Barbara rode her Specialized Epic bike with the Houffalize 1.8 tire in the front (1.6 bar pressure) and the Storm 1.7 tire in the rear (1.7 bar pressure). Filip raced with his Specialized Epic bike with Storm 1.7 tires on the front and back (2.0 bar pressure front and back). Both Barbara and Filip opted to ride with Hope disc brakes this week for the consistent and precise braking. Both riders raced with their RockShox Black Box prototype forks, Crank Brothers pedals, and Specialized Decibel helmets.

Women's Race: The women's race was set to start at 11:30 am but there was a delay due to the discussion over the course. The race organizers and UCI had stated there would be a rain option for the course but, on race day, decided not to cut any sections of the course. The juniors raced in the morning and had lap times of 23 minutes, and the UCI stated that the course was "rideable." The athletes and teams at the start were not satisfied with the UCI's judgment and so, after some discussion, the race started with no changes to the course. The women had to do four laps on the 5-km course. Barbara was on the front line and was surrounded by the surging riders. Only three women riders were able to get to the top of the first climb on their bikes while the rest had to get off and push their bikes. During the first lap, the riders had to find their rhythm and Barbara ended up running most of the climbs and most of the descents. As the second lap approached, the drizzling rain changed to harder rain. Alison Dunlap lost her lead while Kalentieva, Wloszczowska, and Szafraniec took to the front. Barbara held her position in 7th/8th place with another Swiss rider, and Pezzo held a steady fourth place position for most of the race. After Barbara passed the feedzone at the beginning of the third lap, it was obvious that the race was not going well for her even though Barbara held her position. After she did about a half-lap, Barbara pulled out of the race. It wasn't Barbara's day but that's how racing goes, especially with such bad racing conditions.

Men's Race: At the time of the men's start at 2:15 pm, the rain continued to fall. The call-up was one of the fastest on record. The riders who had just warmed up did not want to get cooled down before attacking the hill in front of them. The organizers did the call-up quickly, bringing about 10 riders at a time to the line, which created a somewhat nervous atmosphere. Filip was on the front line (called up third) based on his world cup ranking after the first three races. Filip was feeling really strong after all his training, and was planning to take the world cup leader's jersey and win the race.

The start for Filip was not so great as he tried to pedal his way up the climb while the other riders got off and pushed their bikes up the hill. Filip lost time as he tried to pedal behind the walkers, unable to advance. After passing the feedzone, Filip reached the first of three series of long switchbacks. Just as he completed the first switchback, a large group of riders went under the tape (course marking), cut the course, and arrived just behind him. Filip was in about 20th place. At the far end of the second switchback, Filip got cut off by another group of riders cutting the course. This put him immediately into about 40th or 50th place. Filip followed the course and made it to the third switchback where the wide track turned into singletrack. Again, the riders kept cutting, and Filip was further back in about 70th place. At one point, where a wide section became singletrack, four or five riders had to funnel through one at a time, which slowed things down to a standstill. Filip finally made it out of that section (one spectator said he was in 115th position), and was in around 70th place at the first downhill. The UCI officials were immediately alerted but did not stop the race, and there were no course marshals anywhere on the back stretches after the feedzone. The race continued and the riders who cut were not penalized or disqualified.

Filip was very angry at this point, frustrated that he was so far back and not sure if he could make it to the front. He was also upset that he had probably lost his chance to take the leader's jersey back. Filip rode ahead and passed many riders as best as he could. By the end of the first lap, he was in 48th place. The racing conditions were awful, and the riders dragged themselves and their bikes up the climbs and pedaled murkily through the feedzone. The pace was slow and steady and there were huge gaps between the riders, and the feedzone was eerily quiet except for the sound of tires slipping in the mud and riders suffering. By the end of the second lap, Filip was moving up continuously and had reached 27th place. Filip was fueled by his anger and, by the end of the third lap, was in 15th place. Even though it was raining even harder then, Filip gained more speed and momentum and he moved into 9th place by the end of the fourth lap. Filip kept passing riders, assertively passing even in descents and along narrow singletrack, until reaching 6th place.

From the finish line, we could see Filip rapidly approaching Peraud who was in 5th position. Peraud tried to go faster, and ran with his bike down the descent. Filip was not able to catch Peraud, but gave him a good scare, closing the gap to a mere nine seconds, appearing out of nowhere in the last lap. Filip was very strong especially in the last two laps, when he had the fastest lap times among all the riders. Although Filip was hugely disappointed about the riders who cut the course and losing his chance at winning, he is very satisfied about his race condition and is ready to race again at Mt. Ste. Anne.

Our team goes to Mt. Ste. Anne, Quebec, Canada, for the triple world cup there on Saturday/Sunday, June 26-27. At almost every world cup this year, we arrive and it is sunny and then the weather becomes cold and rainy. And almost each week, the hotel staff, race organizers, and the locals remark that "the weather was so beautiful and sunny and warm. Just last week!" Well, we hear that rain is predicted for this weekend in Canada....

alstublieft!
