S-WORKS EPIC
The ’06 Epic was our Editor’s Choice for best performance XC bike and even with that approbation Specialized will release this ’07 version that rides unequivocally better thanks to the new rear shock.
While the stunningly successful FACT carbon mainframe remains unchanged Specialized significantly upped the ante with is own FlowControl Brain shock. Last year’s shock used an inertial valve that stayed closed until bump forces caused the Brass Mass to dislodge and open the flow ports. A hydraulic “timer” controlled the process resulting in a minute but discernable lag. In ’07 the Brass Mass relies on oil flow to open and close it. This allows for instant performance. Rather than needing an initial bump to open the valve the Brain shock responds to every trail event for seamless efficiency. It also closes quicker to make this the most consistently active “non-active” suspension on the market. Specialized also flipped over the shock so the inertia valve internals have a smoother flow and less overall oil travel within the shock. Another aspect of the design to increase performance is, thanks to oil flow doing the work, the shock has a lighter bias spring for increased sensitivity.
